Male Urinary Continence Program

Urinary Incontinence in Men- An Introduction

We have partnered with urinary continent physiotherapist specialists in the United Kingdom to introduce a program here in Canada. We know that urinary incontinence often occurs with men in various situations (particularly radical prostatectomy). While there are programs in Europe, there have been very few programs in Canada. In fact, we were unable to find an equivalent program addressing men's issues here in South Western Ontario.

Different types of treatment are indicated depending on the type of urinary incontinence identified at assessment. Urge incontinence, stress incontinence, Post-micturition dribble and post-prostatectomy incontinence can all be treated by our physiotherapists with knowledge in this area of patient care. Treatment will include pelvic floor muscle exercises (with emphasis on motor control learning, endurance and strengthening), lifestyle changes, advice, and biofeedback if appropriate.

Post Radical Prostatectomy Urinary Incontinence

Family Physiotherapy Centre of London has been working closely with urologist Dr. Stephen Pautler developing a Urinary Continence program for MEN post radical prostatectomy. Our program is based on the latest research and evidence based information. We usually see the clients after the catheter has been removed and spend 45 minutes performing an assessment, education - including proper contraction of the pelvic floor, and develop an individualized exercise program including: motor control patterning techniques, endurance, strengthening of the external urethral sphincter (anterior pelvic floor). We usually follow up with the patient 4 weeks after the initial assessment and progress the exercises as required. We address any issues that arise and if the patient is still having issues performing the exercises a home biofeedback device is discussed to compliment treatment. The program usually consists of 3-4 treatments over 6 months. We see patients from all over Ontario.

Dr. Stephen Pautler in London approached us to develop a pelvic floor rehab program for urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy. Over the past year we have seen positive results. To quote Dr. Pautler, "My patients have provided very positive feedback about this rehab program. Not only do patients find the multidisciplinary program helpful, it saves me time in clinic."
