Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging

Real-Time Ultrasound Imaging (RTUS)

RTUS is the latest tool in the treatment of low back pain.  Family Physiotherapy Centre of London is the only clinic in the London area currently using this technology.  Many types of low back pain are associated with weakness of the deeper muscles that control the lumbo-pelvic region.  “Core” muscle training is an effective method of treating patients with low back pain, and with RTUS, we are able to visualize these muscles and ensure that our patients are recruiting them properly.

What is Real-Time Ultrasound Imaging (RTUS)?

Real-Time Ultrasound Imaging (RTUS) is a tool used by physiotherapists to visualize deep muscle contractions in real time.  Ultrasound machines use sound waves to generate images of structures deep within the body that would otherwise be difficult to see.  Typically, ultrasound is used to diagnose medical conditions and to generate fetal images during pregnancy.  RTUS in the field of physiotherapy is still very new, and its uses continue to evolve.

What is RTUS used for?

Physiotherapists use RTUS primarily for the treatment of low back pain.  We can visualize the location, size and composition of deeper muscles in the abdominal and lumbar area.  It can also be used as a form of biofeedback so that both the patient and therapist can see muscles contracting in real time.  Many patients with low back pain have weakness of the deeper muscles of the “core” in the lumbar and abdominal area.  Because these muscles are very deep, it is difficult to assess their functional status without RTUS.

Is RTUS right for me?

RTUS is a tool that is used as part of a comprehensive physiotherapy program. If you are experiencing low back pain or dysfunction, it may be used as part of your physical assessment and your ongoing management. After the initial consultation, we will formulate a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

How much does it cost?

Standard physiotherapy charges apply; $75 for the initial consultation which includes an interview and a physical examination and $47 for a treatment session
