What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a regulated health profession that fills a unique and vital role in our health care system. Physiotherapists work with individuals of all ages to break down barriers to physical function. As experts in their field, physiotherapists specialize in eliminating pain and physical limitations that arise from a wide variety of common injuries and conditions such as:
- acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries
- repetitive strain injuries
- spinal conditions
- nerve impingements
- chronic pain
- postural dysfunction
Are physiotherapy services at the Family Physiotherapy Centre of London covered by OHIP?
The Family Physiotherapy Centre of London is a fee for service clinic. This means that most of our clients pay for physiotherapy out of pocket. However, most private health plans cover physiotherapy and you may need a doctor's referral for reimbursement, although this is not always the case (please inquire with you insurance carrier).
For a complete listing of Designated OHIP Physiotherapy Clinics and eligibility criteria, please contact the Ontario Physiotherapy Association at (416) 322-6866.
If you are involved in a workplace injury, you may be eligible for WSIB benefits. If you have been involved in a car accident, you may be eligible for auto insurance benefits.

Can you bill directly to my insurance company?
Many extended health care policies do provide physiotherapy coverage. However, we always recommend that you contact your provider to determine whether or not you are covered and the amount which your provider will cover you for. Some insurance companies will allow us to bill them directly. However, we do have specific guidelines which must be followed in order to do so. Otherwise, you are billed directly and provided with a detailed statement for you to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.
Do you accept Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) claims?
Yes, we do. Your physiotherapist will complete the necessary paperwork to submit to WSIB for approval of treatment funding. We are registered with the WSIB and we are able to bill to WSIB on your behalf, as long as your claim is approved, so you do not have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses.
Do you accept Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) claims?
Yes, we do. We are also able to bill your motor vehicle insurer on your behalf, as long as you claim is approved, and after payments have been made by your extended healthcare coverage (if any).
I was referred to another physiotherapy clinic by my doctor. Can I come to your clinic instead?
Yes, you can receive physiotherapy at any clinic of your choosing. You should ensure that the person delivering your care is a physiotherapist registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
You do not need a referral from your doctor prior to attending physiotherapy, as physiotherapists are considered primary health care providers. However, some insurance companies do require a referral from your doctor in order for you to be reimbursed for expenses. However, you are still able to begin therapy before you acquire that referral.
Will you contact my doctor to discuss you findings?
With your permission, your physiotherapist will discuss their clinical findings with your doctor and/or other members on your health care team.
What does a physiotherapy treatment involve?
A typical physiotherapy treatment program ranges from days to weeks in length, or could be longer (often with less frequent visits), depending on the tonicity of the issue and the nature of treatment program. Your physiotherapist will determine how often you should be seen for treatment, and will not have you come in for physiotherapy any longer than is necessary for your recovery.
Treatment techniques which may be used include:
- manual therapy
- ultrasound and other electrical modalities
- biofeedback
- exercise demonstration
- strengthening and stretching exercise
- acupuncture
- return to work/sport activity/activity productivity
- balance and coordination re-training
- spinal decompression therapy
- education
Can I get physiotherapy services at my home?
Yes you can. You will have at least 45 minutes one-to-one with the physiotherapist. You arrange appointments to suit your own schedule and abilities. The physiotherapist can see the challenges you might be experiencing at home and deal with them directly as part of your treatment session. For instance s/he can see the kind of furniture you have, the layout of your home or office, any stairs you have to climb, and can make recommendations to help you become safer and more mobile in this environment.
What does it cost?
The Ontario Physiotherapy Association recommends $150 per hour. We are guided by this, but because we do not work with clients for less than 45 minutes at a time, we charge less. Our hourly rates are given below.
Service Provision (assessment, treatment and, if requested by you, professional reports.)
Physiotherapist: $120 per hour
Travel costs are kept to a minimum and vary depending on your location and therapist availability. We will talk about your travel rates when you call. Of course, if you travel to our clinic, you avoid travel costs.
How does acupuncture fit in?
Studies support a growing role for the use of acupuncture in Western medical practices, with next to no die-effects from its use. Certified physiotherapist can incorporate acupuncture into their treatment sessions, with the following therapeutic goals:
- decrease pain
- decrease inflammation
- promote tissue healing and regeneration
- restore optimal nerve and muscle function
Acupuncture can be incorporated into your physiotherapy treatment sessions, at no additional cost.
What can I expect from my first physiotherapy treatment?
Your initial assessment will be one-on-one with one of our qualified registered physiotherapists. Assessment usually last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, however it depends on the type of injury. Your physiotherapist will take a thorough history and review your current conditions(s). Any relevant tests will then be performed to determine goals specific to your individual needs. Your first treatment is also included with the cost of your initial assessment.
How long will it take before I begin to feel better?
There is no specific amount of time that it takes for you to start feeling better. Typically, your rate of healing is dependant on many factors such as age, type of injury, length of time since the injury, initial care, diet, and overall health. However, our treatment will help to stimulate your body's own healing response to heal itself. Your physiotherapist may provide you with a better idea of a timeframe when you come in for your first appointment and discuss your treatment goals with you.
